Welcome to Maloca Media. Here you will find galleries of my still photography and perhaps some writing.

As an anthropologist, I am especially interested in society and culture, and in the multitude of ways people interpret and engage with the worlds in which they live. I’ve been surrounded by photography and film for most of my life, so putting the visual idiom to work in ethnography makes a lot of sense to me. The technology which we can now bring to bear on projects like this is unprecedented, and is accessible to more people than ever before, so this seems to be a good time to lock horns with it.

In case you were wondering, ‘maloca’ is a general name for the traditional longhouses of Amerindian communities of Amazonia. A maloca is much more than a house with a thatched roof: its architecture and spatial divisions can reflect social organisation, while in many communitites it is also a site for ritual activities. A maloca is thus a kind of container for society and culture.

I hope you enjoy your visit. Please feel free to email me via the Contact link.
